When contacting your legislators, there are important things to remember to make your voice most effective:
- When Emailing, keep it short and sweet. Tell them how you want them to vote and why in a few simple sentences and they are far more likely to read it and respond. Generally, they will not read emails longer than a paragraph or two. And don’t forget to thank them when they do good work!
- Phone calls are the most effective way to get your message across. Many representatives will not answer or accept emails from folks outside of their district – but offices always accept messages!! If it’s really important, consider multiplying the sound of your voice by calling!
- Faxing is also an effective way of getting a letter directly into a legislator’s hands.
- Contacting Committee members can kill or push a bill through before it ever reaches the floor. You can find Congressional committee info through GovTrack for the US Congress, or through Colorado Capitol Watch for the Colorado Assembly.

US Congress
It is normally considered good form to contact your own representatives when you have issues in Congress, but many are feeling that the entire Congress is “in collusion” and our own representatives cannot be trusted. Recently, bills have been defeated by overwhelming reaction on the national level resulting in mass mailings to the entire Congress. If we use this tactic too much, it may become less effective. However, contacting Committee Members about specific bills they are working on is always one of the most effective things we can do – they know we are watching them and that they will be held responsible for their actions in committee. How do we know this is effective? Committee meetings are where paid lobbyists spend a majority of their time.
We are currently working on an easy weblink for emailing all of congress, but it will take a bit. Also, many congressmen can only be contacted via a web form rather than by email. In the meantime, visit the sites below to find contact and other information on congress:
