Government Basics

This is the nuts and bolts of government participation. If we watch more than 6 hours of TV per week, then taking a few hours per year to attend instructional gatherings, public meetings and caucuses should be possible. It is our civic duty – this is our government for the people and BY the people. The Grand County Website is an excellent resource, and our friends and neighbors working there are very helpful. Start participation at the most local level and work your way up from there. Use the links below to get more information on each branch (Hint: Remember to use your “back” button to return to previous pages) and get helpful tips on effective participation below that.

In addition to these may be Recreation, Fire Protection, School and other taxing districts that may or may not need your immediate attention. Simply showing up at public meetings can have a big impact on how public agencies conduct themselves – they’ll know you are watching them. Contact your local government, or look at your tax bill to see what districts you live in.
