Dear Voters:

Our County Clerk, Sara Rosene, is requesting comments from the public on our wishes regarding mail in voting. Ms. Rosene responded to queries regarding the safety and efficacy of mail in voting:

”I find that mail ballots are quite safe with regard to fraud. Our judges verify signatures on the ballot envelope when it is returned by the voter. We have, at least, 3 different signatures of every voter on file. If our judges have any doubts about the signature, we write a letter to the voter to verify their signature. We have been administering mail ballot elections for a number of years and I find they are very easy to manage.”

Additionally she states, “ Mail ballots are a more cost effective way to administer an election. The cost savings is generally in the area of election judges. When we have a polling place election, we hire around 80 judges.”

Notice of Public Comment Period

Notice is hereby given that the Grand County Clerk and Recorder will receive written public comment beginning on February 25, 2010 regarding whether or not the 2010 Primary Election shall be conducted by mail ballot, with a service center located at the Grand County Administration Building. Please submit your comment in favor of or opposed to a Primary Election conducted by mail ballot by one of the following means:

Mail: Grand County Clerk and Recorder, P. O. Box 120, Hot Sulphur Springs, CO 80451

Hand deliver: Grand County Clerk and Recorder, Grand County Administration Building, 308 Byers Avenue, Hot Sulphur Springs, CO 80451

Fax: 970-725-0100

Public comments received on or before March 15, 2010 shall be entered into the record of the election and considered in the determination of whether or not to conduct a mail ballot Primary Election in Grand County. A public hearing will be held on March 15, 2010, at the Grand County Administration Building, Board of Commissioners Hearing Room, 308 Byers Avenue, Hot Sulphur Springs, CO 80451 at 3:00 p.m. No comment will be accepted after 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 15, 2010.

Dear Friends, Members, Precinct Chairs, and Executive Committee:

Fire is burning in the hearts and minds of true conservatives in our County. There is a very active group of sage conservatives who are ready to put the petal to the metal and get the ball rolling. We’re going to meet this Friday, August 7th at 5:30 at the Brickhouse in downtown Granby. We’ll be joining together to voice our views, to define what we mean when we speak of being conservative, and to chart our path going forward. This meeting should not be missed. You’ll see some new and some familiar faces. Please come if you possibly can. Our strength lies in working together, one community and one County at a time. Without this strength, we stand little chance of turning the tide. Participation is our civic duty.

We’ll each pitch in $7 for a variety of appetizers and we’ll buy our own drinks. If the $7 is difficult for you, no worries. We’ve got you covered.

Write back to let me know if you are coming. I’ll prepare the Brickhouse management with an approximate headcount.

See you there.

Elena C., et al

Here’s a local group worth keeping up with!

Maralyn writes: “Let me tell you about the local meetup that started up last night. We have three main directives whose goal is to Take Our Country Back: Education (we will continue to read, read, read as well as attend local meetings to educate ourselves on the local issues and how our elected officials are handling them.), Unification (we will embrace other groups with like-minded ideas for true reform in this county, state and country), and Election (we will take an active role in local and state politics seeking to first make a difference at home and use the groundswell to have a national impact.) Besides this, we will continue to attend tea parties and contact state and national politicians to let our voices be heard.

If you are interested in joining this group, please return an email requesting to be a part of the freedomfighters and we will add you to our list serve.”

And then she writes re: a current action alert: “Just got the site to access the healthcare “reform” bill—-all 1,018 pages! I have not read all of it–duh, neither have most of the ones voting on it! I can tell you that this bill will be job security for all of the attorneys that are currently in Congress and will be looking for jobs come election time–I hope! It is filled with all kinds of legalize and takes up pages and pages of just indexing and definitions.”

“Please consider making some calls to voice your opinion. When I call, first I always ask if the Sen or Rep has decided how to vote on the legislation I’m calling about. Then I give a couple of reasons I want to see the legislation pass or defeated. I keep it nice–you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar–and ask the aide to please present my plea to the Sen or Rep. Here’s a list of Dems and Repubs who are in a position to sway or be swayed on the healthcare bills. They are prime targets.”

“If you have time and would like to make more calls, I have the list of the “Blue Dog Democrats” that I can also send you. Rep. Mike Ross, D-AK 202-225-3772 Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-ME 202-224-5344 Sen. Max Baucus, D-MT 202-224-2651 Sen. Charles Grassley, R-IA 202-224-3744 Sen. Kent Conrad, D-ND 202-224-2043 Blessings, Maralyn”

Maralyn is a mover and shaker in this community. Her e-mail is candmbranstetter@yahoo.com

Let’s do some moving and shaking with her. A ground swell from all of us is the only thing that could possibly make a difference.

This just in from a citizen of Grand County. It speaks for itself:

“Tired of what you see happening in Washington D.C. and wish that little ole you in Colorado could do something about it? Well here it our chance to join Montana and Texas (and 18 other states) in declaring Colorado a sovereign state as stated the Constitution of the United States of America. Unfortunately, our Colorado legislators have tabled just such a bill. This petition that asks our Senators to reinstate the statement of Colorado Sovereignty which our Colorado legislators have tabled. We the people must not only sign this, but then send it on to all Colorado residents to sign so that we become the vocal majority. Please, please, please don’t sit on this one. We are in this mess right now because we have become complacent and believe that there’s nothing we can do about these things. We have been wrong. There is something each of us can do and that is let our voices be heard loud and clear! Sign it now and send it on.

Over 20 States are declaring Sovereignty under the 10th Amendment, a necessary step for protection from government tyranny. Our federal government was given very limited, enumerated constitutional powers by the states which formed it and states are now stepping up to the plate to claim back their rights. Colorado needed to be on this long list of states taking a strong position in defense of their rights from an increasingly overbearing government. SENATE JOINT MEMORIAL 09-011, sponsored by Reps. Lundberg and Lambert, is Colorado‘s sovereignty declaration.

Sign the petition to Reinstate SJM09-011

This just in from another of our astute members. Call the Governor! Many thanks to our guys in Denver fighting increasingly overreaching government control.

HB1180 passes both Houses, heading to Governor’s Desk

Sen. Greg Brophy (R-Wray)

is the sponsor of HB1180,

the Brady Bypass bill.

5/04/2009 – The Brady Bypass bill, HB1180 by Rep. Steve King and Senator Greg Brophy, has passed the House and Senate, and is heading for Governor Ritter’s desk.

The bill survived a battle in the Senate, where anti-gun lobbyists and legislators tried to amend the bill to require a statewide database of permit holders.

Due to the heroic defense of the bill by Sen. Greg Brophy — who called the legislation a mere pre-approval, since concealed carry permit holders have already undergone an extensive background check — the bill stayed true to the intent of the original bill.

Senate Democrats did manage to change the bill with two amendments:

1. Standardizing the look of an actual permit. Though this is not something we wanted, it’s not a deal killer.

2. Requiring a second form of ID to utilize the Brady Bypass feature. Again, no reason to kill the bill.

The process for buying a firearm would not change for a non-permit holder: to buy a new firearm through a dealer (or even a privately sold firearm at a gun show) the purchaser would still be required to undergo an illegal Brady Registration Check (don’t think that’s unconstitutional? Read Article II Section 13 of the Colorado Constitution, which says the “…right of no person to keep and bear arms….shall be called into question…”).

For a valid Colorado Concealed Carry Permit Holder who is buying a firearm, the process is quite a bit streamlined, though permit holders will be required to have a permit issued after January 2010 (with the new “standardized” look). They will simply present their CCW permit (again, only Colorado permits allow you to bypass) to a dealer, and they’ll skip the wait of a Brady Check (though there are still requirements to fill out the BATFE’s 4473 form).

What you can do:

Call Governor Ritter’s office at (303) 866-2471 and urge him to sign HB1180. If you prefer e-mail, click here to demand Bill Ritter sign HB-1180, the Brady Bypass Bill. Want to help even more? Become a Force Multiplier!

Our office has literally tens of thousands of phone numbers for Colorado gun owners and freedom activists.

We’d like to contact them all — and give them the opportunity to be connected (on our dime) to Governor Ritter’s office to urge him to allow HB1180 to become law.

But we simply can’t afford it — unless you help, today!

You can donate to this project and become a Force Multiplier by clicking here:

https://rmgo.ejoinme.org/MyPages/SignHB1180/tabid/142529/Default.aspx

But you must do it quickly. It takes time to set up this kind of program, and we can’t afford to do it unless we get a lot of help.

Any amount you can donate — whether it’s $50, $500 or just $5 — will be used to contact more gun owners to get this bill passed.

“I have outrageous and sad news on my effort to outlaw the sale of pornography to kids.

Senator Chris Romer (sponsor of SB 170, the bill to give in-state tuition to illegal immigrants; sponsor of HB 1299, bill out abolish the Electoral College) led the fight in conference committee this morning to continue to allow sexual deviants to sell and distribute pornography to minors.

But stripping the Harvey amendment wasn’t enough: he then led the fight to strip a portion of Jessica’s law from HB 1163, which would have established a mandatory 5-year prison sentence for child sexual predators.

E-mail Chris Romer and tell him how outraged you are at his record this year. He has not only voted wrong on every issue, he has led the fight on the worst bills of this session:

Update: Thanks to calls to the State Capital, this was defeated!

I’m writing to request your help on a critical vote in the Senate.
The Senate will soon debate HB 1299, a proposal to replace the Electoral College with a popular vote system for Presidential elections. This violates the spirit and the letter of the U.S. Constitution, as the founders designed our electoral system as a republic, not a pure democracy.
This bill will shift Presidential campaigns and policy towards the leftist population centers on the coasts: New York, Florida, California, and possibly Michigan. Presidential candidates will no longer have any reason to campaign in Colorado, let alone listen to the concerns particular to our state.
If House Bill 1299 passes, Colorado will become a fly-over state in Presidential elections. Our Western principles of individual liberty and responsibility will be ignored in favor of the socialist ideas popular in the liberal coastal enclaves: high taxes, unchecked government intervention, and a complete re-write of our country’s basic moral values and constitutional principles.

The Democrats argue that a popular vote system will prevent another “stolen” election such as the 2000 Presidential election. What they mean is that a popular vote will give them a distinct partisan advantage in campaign season.
They ignore the fact that a popular vote will indeed repeat the 2000 election, but not in the way they imply: Americans will suffer through recounts not just in Florida, but in hundreds of counties across the nation. The results of the Presidential election will hinge not on the will of the people, but on the skill of attorneys and the partisan leanings of “nonpartisan” election judges.
If you want your Presidential vote to count, write the Senate and urge them to vote “no” on House Bill 1299, the Popular Vote bill.
I appreciate your help on this important matter. I will let you know how the Senate votes on HB 1299.
Sincerely,
Ted Harvey
State Senator, Douglas County
